… followed by Chester.

Chris Cornell’s passing was pretty sad. And now Chester hanging himself (like Chris) on Chris’ birthday is pretty rough.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely mean what I said but still:

Like most people my age, I did not like the most of the stuff Linkin Park did after Meteora but enjoyed their music since I was a kid. I was listening to pretty much nothing else and they kind of introduced me to “heavier” music (or at least what you consider heavy when you are young and pure). Sure, Chester is not alone in Linkin Park, but his voice pretty much played a major role for why I love their music so much. I really loved that… you know what I mean. Everyone does.

Linkin Park is and was always about “I scream, my feelings hurt so much, I scream”-stuff, but now that Chester’s dead, it’s really heartbreaking to hear him sing about dying and “when my time comes, forget the wrong that I’ve done” (like seriously, Leave out all the Rest is making my chest ache).

Go ahead and listen to the song below. It’s just so damn perfect… and sad both of them are no more.

RowYerBoat – Competition Results

The competition has ended! Below you can find the top-5 of each mission plus the overall campaign times.
We were able to gather 2920 logs from 79 unique players.
A great ‘thank you‘ to everyone who sacrificed their time and I hope you enjoyed playing the game! There will be some updates including different game modes like parcour, time attack (maybe multiplayer?) and maps – but for now I am busy looking through all those logs…

Chris Cornell’s Death

Griefing on the internet about the loss of someone dear is really not my thing. And the public display of grief and/or condolencens about the death of a celebrity you didn’t even know personally (“someone dear” should be mutually, right?) is IMHO a little pathetic.

But man, I loved that guy. Really, really sad that he felt the need to hang himself (as of 19th May 2017). Go listen to his stuff on YouTube.

Parse Strings from a JSON and create Objects

Friends and I are about to get started in entrepreneurial things. Our customer has a large database of products (mostly beverages) which are mainly just stored as Name:Description pairs. One of our duties is to actually draw as much information as possible from the given descriptions and save them as csv or whatever-table.

Now, doing this by hand is kind of tedious because there are about 2200 products to check. This would take quite a while to do manually, so I sat down and wrote a tiny parser for that!

After specifying a dictionary in form of JSON and defining some classes, the program is able to parse a string to an object, which then can be used for whatever usage there is. Nifty, as this really can save quite some time and is easy to maintain for even non-programmers (“program it for your customer and he is happy for a day, but teach your customer to fill a JSON and he’ll make himself happy. All day, every day.”).

Full code and detailed documentation is as always available at this github repository!

Tex File Creation Scripts

The new semester has started and I am hearing some lectures where you have to hand in assignments every week. We computer scientists are not that pretty ourselves in most cases, so at least our submissions should not look like the stereotypical .doc submission of other students. And logic is pretty, and $latex \LaTeX$ is like so logic, you actually have to program your text.

So over the past semesters, I have, just like most of my fellow students, created a bunch of \newcommands (“macros”) tailored to my needs when TEXing. They are kind of default to my submissions so these macros should be present in every tex file I create. Continue reading “Tex File Creation Scripts”

Rotating Cameras and Moving Forward

One thing I stumbled across in many games, where you can rotate the camera freely, is how “move forward”, is handled respective to the given camera and scene. Sometimes you push the “up” button (on whatever device you are) and end up moving the game’s character you are in charge for navigating through life to the left or to the right.

This is a problem which also occured to me when working on the controls of TheRPG and I have found a nice way of solving this issue.

Upcoming Series: TheRPG

I am currently working on getting along with Unity and also playing Dragon Quest VII (the 3DS remake of the PS1 Game “Dragon Warrior VII”), I decided I should create a classic RPG. Nothing too innovative and rather basic, just like the ones I created quite some time ago in the RPG Maker 2000/2003/XP/VX (sweet sweet memories of sitting infront of my computer the whole summer). So, why not share some of the stuff I did? As I am wildly uncreative finding names, I’d just call this project “TheRPG”.

So in the future you will find some of the stuff I implemented into the game concerning all kinds of mechanics you’d need for a RPG – player and camera movement, NPCs, menus, combat, map properties, interactability and so on and so forth. I’ll keep this post updated so the posts will be easier to find.

Hello Internet

Hi everyone!

After fiddling some hours with this blog’s layout and posting a dozen of times Lorem Ipsums, setting up some other crap and generally getting around, how wordpress actually works ect….. I think it’s now time for my first post. And here it is.

I don’t know to whom I am actually writing this lol, I have no plans of promoting my blog what-so-ever. But still, I think it’s great to write down some thoughts or accomplishments or generally cool stuff I wrote (not my blog posts… but code). If there would be just one person reading my blog and having an inspiration in some kind of way, I am happy.

If you came by just by accident, go check out who I am https://blog.lamsal.com/about and what this blog will be mostly about.

So, uh, “stay tuned” or something!
